COUNTRY CLUB HILLS -- Bill Brown had never owned a Mercedes-Benz, and he did not expect he would tool around in one.
But that was before the Country Club Hills police chief aced the 7th hole at Odyssey Country Club in Tinley Park at a recent charity golf outing.
Good timing on his part, since the par 3 hole was the Together We Cope tournament's "Win a Mercedes" hole. Brown picked up his silver 2005 Mercedes-Benz C230 sports sedan with charcoal interior last month at Orland Mercedes.
Before hitting his wonderous shot, Brown had noticed that the ball Country Club Hills Mayor Dwight Welch hit came up a little short.
So he put his 5-iron back in the bag, took out a 4-wood and swung.
"It was one of the prettiest ball flights I've seen off my clubs ever," Brown said. "But I thought I lost the ball until [bystanders] started screaming."
Orland Mercedes Sales Manager James Subka said the dealership has sponsored charity holes before, but it never had to pay up with a car.
"At first we couldn't believe it when the call came in. The odds are not real great, and let alone on a specific hole, it is a pretty substantial event."
